How We Made "GPT Girlfriend" (And Why the Internet Had Feelings)

I DON'T NEED CHATGPT, MY GIRLFRIEND KNOWS EVERYTHING — the GPT Girlfriend tee

Every once in a while, you make a shirt that stops being a shirt and starts being a discourse. "GPT Girlfriend" was that shirt for us.

Here's the whole story.

Where the line came from

Half joke, half observation. Everyone has that friend (or is that friend) whose group-chat energy started feeling suspiciously like an LLM sometime around 2024. The overly composed "I hear you." The perfectly calibrated affirmation. The vibe of someone who read a therapy Substack in the middle of the conversation.

Instead of writing an essay about it, we printed the phrase and moved on. Which — spoiler — is the LessSaid production pipeline for basically everything.

The design itself

Classic LessSaid formula: big all-caps setup, smaller italic punchline underneath. Clean sans-serif at the top, cursive italic at the bottom. Three-second read on the front, ten-second reread if you actually process it.

The typography was doing 100% of the work — no illustration, no color trick. That's the whole point of the confessional tee: the words have to carry the design. If they can't, add nothing to try and save them.

What happened when we posted it

The TikTok did what TikToks do. Comments split three ways almost immediately:

  • The people who thought it was hilarious and ordered one within 20 minutes.
  • The people who thought it was mean, or aimed at them personally, and said so.
  • The people who tagged their situationship without comment.

Group 3 was the largest. Group 3 always wins.

Why we still stand by it

Not every shirt is a shrug. If a shirt makes people uncomfortable enough to write a comment about it, that shirt is doing exactly what a slogan tee is supposed to do. "Live Laugh Love" doesn't get comments. It doesn't get anything, because it's saying nothing.

"GPT Girlfriend" said something specific about a very current feeling. It also — crucially — was funny. The two together is the whole brand thesis. If we're not landing both, we're not printing.

Where it lives now

It's still in the drop. It'll be in the drop for a while. It's the kind of shirt that ages faster than most (culturally-specific), which is fine — that just means when it finally does retire, it retires as a genuine artifact of this weird moment in the internet's history.

Anyway. If you want it while it's still printed: right this way. If you don't, no notes — there's plenty else in the drop for you.

Just don't send us the "I'd never wear this" comment. We already got that one. Twice.
